Agreeing with Huw Lewis...

on Tuesday, 18 November 2008

It may be an uncomfortable position for me, but the last two posts on Huw Lewis AM's blog have found me in 100% agreement with the man.

Firstly, he highlighted the needed to work together to tackle the scourge of racism and then encouraged people to use their local credit union. Fair play Huw, you're quite right to commit yourself to work with all the main parties in Wales to combat the threat of the BNP.

However, I have always been someone who has been annoyed by some politicians who are too keen to attack the BNP in public. After all, while we must fight them tooth and nail, we should not be giving them free publicity. We should be seeking to stiffle them and not give them the oxygen of attention. Maybe this blog post itself contradicts my own argument (as I'm giving them publicity) but that's my view.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what we bloggers can do to fight the fascists.

I take the opposite approach. The only way to truly discredit the BNP is to expose their ideas in the white hot light of public debate, which will also starve them of the ‘outsiders’ status. By banning them, you are merely allowing them to milk the position of being the ‘silent majority’, which they use when targeting disaffected voters.

There's no simple answer on the BNP argument, and mainstream political parties have disagreed about sharing a platform with them at election time. For my money, you have to challenge these views. Yes, they may be looking for reaction, but they are so bad at hiding their true fascist agenda that they make fools of themselves. If you have chance to look at the BNP media list you can see that some have resigned in the face of media exposing them.
