Making Welsh language history

on Friday, 21 November 2008

It's not the time for sound bites, but I sense the hand of history on my thigh.

Yes, the Welsh Language is spoken for the first time at the Council of Ministers, so what does the Daily Mail write?

"Welsh spoken for first time at EU but is it all just a waste of Brit taxpayers' money?

Welsh has been spoken officially for the first time at the European Union - sparking claims it is wasting more UK taxpayers' cash.

The EU gave the go-ahead for the ancient language, which dates back to the 6th Century, to be used in speeches at the Council of Ministers if translators are present.

European legislation will also be translated into Welsh and people wanting to correspond with major EU bodies in the native tongue can do so."

Not only do they get their facts wrong - it is not the first time Welsh has been spoken at the European Union, that happened in 2004 when Jill Evans MEP first spoke the language - but they also stir up anti-Welsh and anti-European feeling. Just another reminder never to buy the Daily Mail.

I'm not surprised that this made it into the Daily Mail - it's a shame that positive stories from Wales and about the Welsh language don't make it onto their pages once in a while...

In this instance, I can see some logic in their madness because I'm not sure the use of Welsh in Brussels serves a practical purpose???

I thought that was a strange headline - think - Make Poverty History!

Is it nice having a hand of history on your thigh?

Out of interest you might like to see this You Tube video.

It is support by the Esperanto Association, in support of minority linguistic rights.

This may have been my fault - I sent the story to the TaxPayers Alliance, as I think anything which adds more Bureaucracy to the EU is dreadful.

So they may have 'warmed up' the Daily Mail - and TPA never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Like 'Politics Cymru', promoting Welsh is fine, but doing so at the EU is just the sort of bonkers idea that sets back the cause of promoting Welsh use locally and gives ammunition to the opponents.
