My favourite Lord, Lord Mandy of Dogma, must have had too much of good time on Russian oligarchs' boats again if his proposals to privatise the Royal Mail are anything to go by.
As this article from the Guardian reminds us, a Labour party 2008 policy forum agreed to maintain a "wholly publicly owned, integrated Royal Mail group". So not only does the proposal to privatise the Royal Mail fly in the face of common sense, but the express wishes of his own party members as well.
One other point worth noting - the Liberal Democrats have been strangely silent on the proposal. Normally they are jumping up and down about anything that threatens post offices. Now, I wonder if that's because the sell-off was their idea in the first place?

OK Lenin, but part of the Post Office's problem is it's massive pension policy. Would Plaid, and it's left wing AMs support increasing the age of retirement to public sector workers now and not only to those who have just started work? would they support the Post Office making staff redundant and closing post offices to save money (i.e. tax payers money)?
Or do they want it all - massive early pensions, post offices on every corner, no job losses etc?
What's the choice?
Plaid Voter
PV - the question you ask is different from the issue: Labour promises one thing, but does another. There may be choices for Plaid to make, but the story - for now , as posted - is about Labour saying one thing and doing another (i.e. lying).
Peter - so good to see you pop-up here wasting our taxes again!
Has Sir Roger Jones caught up with you yet?
I am sure he will before too long :-)
I one day would like to see Wales and independent nation. It is possible and despit what the Labourites say....it could be viable. However, if it was run as NuLabour has been running the UK, it would soon be going cap in had to the IMF.....as I believe is very possible for the UK in the near future. Public sector pension liabilites are unsustanable. I wouldn't be too confident if I had a public sector pension.
What's your point Peter? That your spokesperson wrote a press release that failed to mention your party's support for privatisation of the royal mail?
We can't afford pensions folks! Wars on the other hand... And there's always enough dough to bail out the banksters, of course!
But seriously, remember when the Liberals under Kennedy voted against the leadership, defeating a motion on postal privatisation? The capitalist press derided chat-show Charlie as a mere Chairman of his party, not a leader. In other words a leader is someone who can impose unpopular policies. Not very democratic, but hey, democracy doesn't lead to public assets being sold to foreign monopolies, does it?
Note that Rupert Murdoch has a stake in TNT - so this may be about New Labour getting the backing of his media machine at the next election. Either that or Mandy is still working for the EU and is trying to win Rupert to a yes vote on the Euro...

Something like a third of my council tax bill goes towards paying their pensions. I don't have ANY pension at all. I work for a haulage company here in Wales. My last two jobs didn't offer any pension either. The one before that contributed 3% of my salary towards a pension pot. Public sector staff will in the future have to contribut more themselves.....and wars are I believe quite good for economies....although I don't advocate sarting one.
The press release explicitly refers to our policy which still stands and which I support. It is very similar to what the Government is now proposing to do.
Anonymous - wars can't be that good for economies, both the UK and US are in a deep crisis!
I think instead of leveling down the pensions of public sector workers we should level up pensions for those of us in the private sector.
