Leighton Delivers

on Tuesday, 27 April 2010

In the absence of a Welsh Labour blog presence, it falls to this blog to report the achievements of Welsh Labour in government.

Without knowing the ins and outs of education in Wales, or the full status of the school closures debate that is gripping rural Wales, it's clear that Leighton Andrews has already delivered on two key issues which are entirely in tune with the values of Plaid, and which demonstrate how Labour has been able to broaden its agenda in government beyond defensive, tribal concerns, by working alongside Plaid Cymru.

Firstly, Leighton's laptops are important. The fact it is only a pilot scheme is a slight problem and could open up the project to accusations of excluding some pupils and schools, but the finances aren't there for a universal roll-out.

Secondly, Leighton Andrews has published the Welsh-medium Education Strategy. He wants the Welsh Government to create bilingual citizens. He is relying on the good will of local authorities in boosting the provision of education in Welsh, but states quite clearly that the Welsh Government is willing to step in if local authorities fail to meet their obligations.

It's a world away from Labour councillors in Cardiff warning about "ethnic cleansing". Leighton Andrews knows what he is talking about and in his strategy- our nation's first- has pointed out a number of concrete ways that assessing parental demand and providing for that demand can be improved.

And that is far more important than the petty tribalism that has marred Welsh political blogging in the past.

Seeing as the strategy involves £1.75m of new spending, presumably the 'welsh' Lib Dems will be complaining that the Welsh Government is doing its job during election time?

Yes, fair play to Andrews - and I say that as a Plaid person. He's delivered, as part of the One Wales Government the first even education strategy for the Welsh language.

It wouldn't have happened without Plaid in government. But it's to welcomed by whoever delivers it.

Da iawn Leighton Andrews.

This document - if it's impelemted and not watered down by our colonial civil service or whoever governs after May 2011 - could be one of the most historic documents ever. In many respects it's far more importand and could have a bigger implication on Welsh society than the so-called 'Leader's Debate' which was on television the same week.

Is the legacy of the Blue Books being slowly overturned?

The blog has become a real love-in for Leighton Andrews ... bit of a change from some of your previous postings?! Has he had a conversion or you?

Well I don't "love" the man, Welsh Labour Grassroots once describes him as the only "New Labour" politician in the Assembly, and Andrews himself didn't hesitate in calling Plaid a fascist party only eighteen months ago.

However he appears to have changed his methods considerably and is acting as a progressive education minister (for now). As long as he does not attempt to implement New Labour policies this blog will back him. People can change, and it would be ridiculous not to give Andrews credit for this valuable strategy.

His change of methods (and indeed promotion) coincides with a certain anti-Plaid tribalist no longer working for him. LOL.

Peter Hain in 2007's 'Partnership for Progess' pamphlet-

"On relations with Plaid, Mr Hain said, “The coalition was in order to get stable government, pure and simple. It doesn’t represent a fusion of nationalist policy and Labour policy at all.”"

Good one Hain!
